Unlocking Africa's mineral wealth for sustainable growth

Unlocking Africa's mineral wealth for sustainable growth

The African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) is a specialised agency of the African Union (AU) established to drive the sustainable and transformative development of Africa’s mineral resources in line with the Africa Mining Vision (AMV) and Agenda2063. The AMV, adopted by AU Heads of State in 2009, envisions a mining sector that catalyses broad-based economic growth, social equity, and environmental stewardship. For stakeholders the AMDC serves as a strategic partner in advancing Africa’s green mineral ambitions, ensuring these resources contribute to global energy transitions while fostering local value addition and industrialisation.

Our mission and mandate

The AMDC's mission is to support African nations in harnessing their mineral wealth – particularly green minerals critical for the global energy transition – to achieve sustainable development and economic prosperity. Its mandate includes the following priorities of action.

Advising member states on mineral policies and regulatory frameworks that align with the AMV principles, promoting transparency, accountability, and equitable benefit-sharing.

Promoting downstream processing and regional value chains to ensure minerals are processed domestically rather than exported as raw ores, thereby creating jobs and driving green industrialisation.

Enhancing the use of geological data and mineral information systems to support investment decisions, sustainable planning, and resource governance.

Fostering partnerships between governments, regional economic communities (RECs), private sector actors, civil society, and research institutions to align efforts and leverage expertise.

Integrating ASM into formal economies while ensuring social and environmental responsibility.

AMDC and the African Green Minerals Observatory

The AMDC is the institutional anchor for the African Green Minerals Observatory (AGMO), providing strategic oversight and ensuring the Observatory's work aligns with the broader goals of the Africa Mining Vision and the African Green Minerals Strategy. For AGMO stakeholders, including policymakers, investors, researchers, and communities, the AMDC offers a comprehensive suite of services.

Data-driven insights

Data-driven insights

The AMDC advocates for robust geological and market data (like that provided by AGMO) to inform policy and investment decisions, ensuring Africa positions itself strategically in global green mineral value chains.

Policy coordination

Policy coordination

The AMDC helps harmonise green mineral strategies across Africa, enabling countries to negotiate better terms, attract sustainable investments, and avoid the "pit-to-port" model that has historically limited local benefits.

Capacity building

Capacity building

Through technical assistance and knowledge products, the AMDC empowers stakeholders to develop skills, institutions, and frameworks needed for responsible green mineral exploitation.

Advocacy for equity

Advocacy for equity

The AMDC emphasises that green minerals should be exploited in a socially and environmentally responsible manner, ensuring that mining benefits are shared inclusively and that environmental impacts are minimised.
